LESSONS FROM THE LINEAGES: "The Women Who Desired An Inheritance"

THE WOMEN WHO DESIRED AN INHERITANCE

Numbers 26:1-4, 28-33;  27:1-11

Introduction:

A.  I have some names for you to consider the next time you have a

baby girl.  Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

B.  You may not remember their names, but you should remember

what they did.  They came asking for an inheritance.

            1.  Women had few rights in the ancient world.

Barely more than children.  It was a man’s world.

            2.  Inheritance was given to sons.

Older son got the most.  Other sons got something.

Daughters got nothing.  Needed to marry.

                        EX:  The Prodigal Son

            3.  These women had heard of the promised land that flows

                  with milk and honey.

            4.  These women’s father had died.  He was one of the

unbelievers who would die in the wilderness.

He did not die in the rebellion of Korah.

5.  These women had not brothers to inherit the promise.

6.  Therefore, they came asking.

C.  There are some Very Important Lessons we see in these women

I.  The Lesson about Change.

            A.  There is a Wrong Way to Seek a Change.

                        1.  The way that protesters on campuses seek.

                        2.  The way Black Lives Matter seeks change.

                        3.  The way that Colin Kaepernick and those who

kneel at the National Anthem seek change.

                        4.  There are two women who sought a change in

approaching Moses.  Miriam sought change in

the wrong way and for the wrong reason.

(Numbers 12)  God struck Miriam with leprosy.

            B.  There is a Right Way to Seek a Change.

                        1.  They came Together.

They came in agreement with the request.

Again I say unto you, That if two of you

shall agree on earth as touching any thing

that they shall ask, it shall be done for them

of my Father which is in heaven

                                    (Matt.18:19)

                        2.  They came To the Authority.

There had been an established way to handle

disputes in Israel.  Bring it to the judges.

                                    The final judge was Moses.

15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.  17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.  (Matthew 18)

                        3.  They came To the Lord.

Moses sought the will of God.

We should always seek God’s will.

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.  10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.  (Matt.6)

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering…(James 1)

                        4.  They came To a Decision.

Need to abide by the decision of God.

                                    Some liked it.  Some didn’t.

                                    Rebellion wasn’t allowed.  Like Korah.

II.  The Lesson about Chauvinism.

            A.  Many of the Jews and Other Ancient Men were

                  Chauvinistic in their Thinking.

                        1.  Yes, God had designed Eve as a help to Adam.

                        2.  Yes, God wanted husbands to be leaders.

                        3.  Yes, God selected male leadership in Israel.

                        4.  Yet, some took this further and degraded women

                              Treated her as property.

Jewish men said this prayer every day:

"Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a Gentile."
"Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a slave."
Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a woman."

            B.  God is a rejecter of the Ultra-Male Chauvinism in

Spiritual Matters.  Judaism & Christianity did more

for Women than Any Movement of History.

                        Note what this ruling indicates:

                        1.  Women have an Equal Hearing by God.

Some of the greatest prayers of the Bible

                                    are from Godly Women.

                                    EX:  Hannah, Syro-Phonecian woman, the

woman before the unjust judge, Lydia, Mary

                        2.  Women have an Equal Inheritance from God.

This was a monumental change in Law.

Like giving women the right to vote.

                        3.  Women have an Equal Hope in God.

                                    a.  When the cause seemed hopeless, they

placed their hope in God to help them.

                                    b.  God is the hope of every man, woman,

boy, girl, black, white, etc.  Only Hope.

            C.  This is not to say that God is a Proponent of Women’s

                  Liberation.

                        1.  God doesn’t hold to abortion.

                        2.  God doesn’t approve of bra burning.

                        3.  God doesn’t agree with radical feminism.

                        4.  God doesn’t say that men & women still have

some differences in roles & responsibilities.

            D.  God Elevated the Esteem of Women.

                        1.  Women are not just sex objects.

                        2.  Women are not just property.

                        3.  Women are not just second-class citizens.

                        4.  Women are very important to God and

     valued by God.

III.  The Lesson about Christianity.

Allow me to make an analogy to what happened here

and what happens to us as believers.

            A.  These women had a father who sinned and died,

      leaving them with no inheritance.

Our father, Adam, sinned and died, leaving us with

            no Heavenly Inheritance.

12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:  (Romans 5:12)

B.  The only hope for these women was to come by faith

to God’s Intercessor, Moses, and plead for an

      Inheritance.

The only hope that we have of a Heavenly

Inheritance is to come by Faith to God’s

            Intercessor, Jesus Christ.

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;  (I Tim.2:5)

And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.  (Heb.9:15)

            C.  The one restriction on these women is that they had to

marry a certain husband to have the Inheritance.

The one essential to our obtaining a Heavenly

Inheritance is to come to the only prescribed

                 Bridegroom, Jesus Christ.

12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.  (Acts 4:12)

Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.  (Col.3:24)

            D.  The women believed and were given their inheritance

once they crossed the river Jordan.

All believers in Christ will receive their Heavenly

Inheritance once they cross the river Death.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.  (I Peter 1)

Conclusion:

A.  Do you desire a Heavenly Inheritance?

B.  There is only one way to receive it—you must come to Jesus.
