Spiritual Warfare 101: Take Your Sword out of the Scabbard

TAKE YOUR SWORD OUT OF THE SCABBARD

Ephesians 6:17b

Introduction:

A.  When you get to looking at the Armor of God, it is really

      talking about Jesus.

            1.  Jesus is the Truth.  "I am the way, the truth, and the life.

            2.  Jesus is our Righteousness.

            3.  Jesus is the Prince of Peace.

            4.  Jesus is the Object of our Faith.

            5.  Jesus is the Author of our Salvation.

            6.  Jesus is the Word of God.

To put on the Armor of God is to put on Christ.

B.  The Roman soldier carried a short sword upon his belt.

            1.  It was used for hand to hand combat.

            2.  It was both defensive and offensive.

It deflected the enemy's blows and gave blows itself.

C.  I don't know much about using a sword.

            1.  People are trained to use a gun to defend themselves.

            2.  People don't have many swords laying around.

D.  I do know one thing:  A sword isn't useful if it is still in the

      scabbard.

E.  The same is true with the Sword of the Word.

            1.  God gave us His Word to Defend ourselves.

            2.  It is both a Defensive and Offensive weapon.

            3.  But it does us absolutely no good sitting around

on a shelf or in a drawer.

            4.  We must take our Sword out of the Scabbard.

F.  Note five times when you need to take out your sword.

I.  When You are in Warfare.

A.  Satan may try to defeat you with his works and words.

B.  Satan can be defeated through God's Word.

            1.  By using God's Word.

                        EX:  Jesus

            2.  By obeying God's Word.

                        *  The devil won't be impressed with your Bible

knowledge if you aren't living the Bible.

                        *  The devil flees when he sees you know the Word

and are willing to live the Word.

                        *  This is how we resist the devil.

                            (Read Psalm 119:9-16)

            3.  When you are tempted by Satan, draw out your sword.

II.  When You are in Need of Wisdom.

When we need guidance, direction, and wisdom,

there are two things we are told to do as Christians:

A.  We are to Seek Wisdom from God in Prayer.

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth

to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be

            given him."  (James 1:5)

B.  We are to Seek Wisdom from God in His Word.

            (see II Timothy 2:15; 3:16-17)

            1.  Satan tries to mislead us.

            2.  God, through His Word, tries to lead us.

ILL:  Would you not draw out your map if lost?

We need to draw out the sword in life.

III.  When You Come to Worship.

A.  One of the characteristics of end-time churches is lack of the

      Word.  (see I Timothy 4:1-4)

EX:  Churches that never open the Bible.

Churches that rarely refer to the Bible.

Churches that emphasize other things besides

                             the Bible  (music, entertainment, etc.).

                             (Read article by Answers magazine)

B.  True churches should uplift the Word or they will be spiritually

      defeated.

ILL:  Imagine an army who didn't want to listen to their

                        commanding officer. Wouldn't take orders.

                        Only concerned with selfish desires.

They would be defeated in battle.

IV.  When You Come to Work.

A.  The Word of God shows us how to Work on ourselves.

"For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."  (Heb.4:12)

B.  The Word of God shows us how to Work in the church.

            1.  Our personal spiritual gifts.

            2.  Our peaceful, pure spirits.

C.  The Word of God shows us how to Work in the world.

            1.  By our example.

            2.  By our exposition.

                        ILL:  Like the architects blueprints.

Shows how to work.  Draw them out first.

V.  When You are Weak and Weary.

A.  We all get tired in the battle of life.

            1.  But Satan does not get tired and will come at us when

                 we are weak.

            2.  Fortunately, God does not get tired and fights for us.

            3.  One way he helps us is through His Word.

B.  God helps us when we are tired and weak through His Word.

            1.  He builds us up through the Word.

                        a.  It is milk to the babe.

                        b.  It is meat to the mature.

                        c.  Regular diet of the Word makes us stronger.

            2.  He lifts us up through the Word.

                        a.  The Word refreshes us.

                        b.  The Word revives us.

"Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and He saveth them out of their distresses.  He sent His word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions."  (Ps.107:19-20)

Conclusion:

A.  The Bible is the Sword of the Lord.

B.  But it does you no good sitting in its scabbard.

C.  Draw out your swords.  Begin studying God's Word.
