TWO MEN WHO WALKED WITH GOD: "Enoch" (Gen.521-24)

TWO MEN WHO WALKED WITH GOD

“The Story of Enoch”

Genesis 5:21-24

Introduction:

A.  I want to reaquaint you with two very important men.

B.  Reasons why it is important to study the lives of Enoch & Noah

            1.  They are both help up in Scripture as examples.

            2.  They are two of the most interesting characters in Bible.

            3.  They both walked with God and can teach us how.

            4.  They both are types of those taken in the Rapture.

·        Enoch shows the Character of the Rapture:  Sudden.

·        Noah shows the Conditions around the Rapture:  Sinful.

·        If we want to be ready for the Rapture we need to study the lives of Enoch and Noah.

C.  Three things that characterized the life of Enoch.

I.  He had Fellowship with God.  (Gen.5:22, 24)

A.  “Walk” is a the biblical expression for

“Fellowship and obedience that results in divine favor.”

B.  Fellowship with God is not Universal.

            1.  Adam had fellowship with God in the garden.  (Gen.3:8)

            2.  Seth and his descendants called on the name of the Lord.

     (Gen.4:26)

            3.  But Cain and his descendants left the Fellowship of God

Church Sign:  “If you feel far from God, who moved?”

C.  But Enoch had a Conspicuous Walk & Fellowship with God.

            1.  It stood out above the others in the lineage of Seth.

            2.  It stood out above others in his day.

D.  Enoch also had a Continuous Walk & Fellowship with God.

            1.  He had his fellowship with God for at least 300 years.

            2.  The name Enoch means “Dedicated.”

E.  Do you have a conspicuous, noticeable walk with God?

            1.  Not Pharisaical.  Walking to be praised.

            2.  But Peculiar.  Walking to praise God.

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood,

an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth

the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into

His marvelous light.”  (I Pt.2:9)

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your

good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

(Matt.6:16)

F.  Do you have a consistent, constant walk with God,

or are some has your life been a series of hills & valleys?

G.  If we want to be prepared for the Rapture we need to have

the right fellowship with God.  We need to get things out of our

lives that hinder our fellowship with God.

ILL:  A father and daughter were especially close. They enjoyed spending time together. If he went for a walk or made a social call, she wanted to go along. But then he began to notice a change. When he asked her to accompany him on errands, she made excuses. As the weeks passed, he became concerned about it. When his birthday came, she presented him with a pair of slippers she had made. Then he realized that she had been working on them while he was out of the house. "Darling, I like these slippers very much," he said gently, "but next time buy the slippers and let me have you all the days. I would rather have you than anything you can make for me."

II.  He had Faith in God.  (Heb.11:5-6)

A.  He had faith in the Presence of God.  “He is”

            1.  This is not just a statement that he believed in the

     existence of a higher power.

2.  This shows that he believed in an ever-presence,

     personal, knowable God.

ILL:  On a plaque in a home:

“God is the Head of this house.

The unseen guest at every meal.

The silent listener to every conversation.”

EX:  Children need to realize God is with them,

        even in the dark.

Teens need to realize God is with them,

       even on a date.

Parents need to realize God is with them,

       even changing diapers.

Elders need to realize God is with them,

even to the point of death.

B.  He had faith in the Profit of God.

“rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

There are two ideas we seem to have lost in this generation:

            1.  Prayer is Powerful.

                        There is a God in heaven; He hears our prayers;

He intervenes in the affairs of men.

ILL:  Jena’s Prayer Jar.

            2.  Purity is Profitable.

·        Physical purity is profitable.                    If you don’t abuse your body with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, promiscuity, you will be better off.  This is the promise of God.

·        Mental purity is profitable.                          If you won’t harbor greed, lust, anger, bitterness, covetousness, worry in your mind you will be a better person.

·        Spiritual purity is profitable.                        Any man who gives his life to Christ and submits to Him as Savior and Lord will be rewarded, both here and hereafter.

C.  He had a faith that pleased God.

            1.  There is no greater testimony that to say you pleased

     God.

2.  The only way you can please God is by faith in God.

·        A man can have works without faith and not please God.

·        Only when a man has faith that produces works does he please God.

ILL:  I like for my boys to clean their rooms.

But suppose I came home one day and one had their room cleaned and he came to me and said, “I cleaned my room so you would love me and keep me as your child.”

I would be saddened and disappointed.

However, if I come home and a boy comes to me and says, “I really appreciate all you do for me as my Father and so I wanted to show you how much by cleaning my room and all the bathrooms today.”  I would be greatly pleased (and stunned).

            3.  If we want to be ready for the Rapture, we must have

                 a vibrant faith in God.

III.  He had a Fear of God.  (Jude 14-15)

A.  Enoch was a prophet of coming judgment.

B.  Enoch even named his son “Methuselah” which means

“When he is gone it comes.”

C.  Enoch had a proper fear of God’s Sure Judgment.

ILL:  Can you image every time little Methuselah got sick?

                        Could this be the time?

D.  Enoch had a proper fear of God’s Soon Judgment.

1.  He wanted to warn others of this coming judgment

so that they could repent and prepare.

2.  We don’t have the book of Enoch, but the Bible refers to

it.  It was surely lost in the Flood.  He tried to prepare

    them.

E.  Do you have a proper fear of God’s sure and soon coming

     judgment on the world?

The Tribulation will be a terrible time to be alive.

F.  Do you have a proper fear of God’s sure and soon coming

     judgment on you?

“…it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the

judgment.”  (Heb.9:27)

1.  We usually quote this verse to say Enoch didn’t die and

he may be one of the two witnesses.

2.  But this verse is given to remind us of the judgment.

We will all have to stand before God.

·        The sinner will face God at the Great White Throne Judgment and be cast into the Lake of Fire.

·        The saint will face God at the Judgment Seat of Christ and his works will be evaluated for reward.

Conclusion:

A.  There are a lot of folks here who aren’t ready for their Rapture:

            1.  They don’t have the right Fellowship with God.

            2.  They don’t have the right Faith in God.

            3.  They don’t have the right Fear of God.

B.  Enoch was ready to meet God.

It is time we should be getting ready, too!
